Pruned to Grow: What God Teaches Us in Fall

Fall always feels like God’s living parable to me. 🍂 The air shifts, the trees let go, and suddenly what looked alive just a few weeks ago is stripped bare. At first glance, it seems like loss. But scripture tells us something deeper is happening: “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit…so that it will be even more fruitful” (John 15:2).

Pruning is not punishment—it’s preparation. Just like a gardener knows when to trim so the plant can thrive, God knows when to remove what no longer serves us. It might be a habit, a relationship, or even an old version of ourselves. It can sting. It can feel empty. But it’s never wasted.

This season, I’m surrendering perfectionism. I’ve held onto it like a fig leaf, covering my insecurities. But God keeps reminding me that His strength shows up in my weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). To be naked and unashamed means I don’t have to perform for His approval. I can rest, trust, and be honest about where I am.

Here’s how I’m leaning into the pruning this fall:

  1. Morning Word before phone – starting each day rooted in scripture.

  2. Weekly nature walks – letting creation preach the gospel without words.

  3. Journaling my releases – literally writing down what I’m letting go of.

Cubs, I invite you to ask: What is God pruning in your life this season? Instead of resisting, could you surrender and trust His hands?

Because here’s the truth: Winter may look quiet, but spring always comes. 🌱

Comment one thing you’re releasing this fall—I’ll be praying over them with you this week.
